If a laser burned you, the dark patch it left is not permanent damage in most cases. It is pigment, and pigment can be worked on.
Women come to me from Stonecrest and Lithonia after a treatment somewhere else went wrong. Usually the story is the same: a package at a chain clinic or a med spa, a few sessions that stung more than they expected, and then a patch of skin along the jaw, the neck or the bikini line that is markedly darker than everything around it and has not faded in months.
What happened to your skin
The machine aimed at your pigment instead of past it. That is what IPL and alexandrite devices do — they target melanin, and on Fitzpatrick V and VI skin there is melanin everywhere, not only in the hair. The energy went into your skin. The skin was burned, mildly or not so mildly, and it healed the way melanin-rich skin heals: by laying down more pigment over the injury. That is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and it is the single most common thing I undo.
Why it has not faded
Because most of what is sold for it makes it worse. Scrubs and gritty exfoliants are fresh irritation. Glycolic acid penetrates too fast for darker skin and irritates. Over-the-counter lightening creams bought without a prescription are the worst of it — a number of them contain mercury or high-strength hydroquinone, and they can leave you with a deeper, bluish discolouration that is far harder to treat than what you started with.
What I look at first
Whether it is pigment or scarring, because those are different problems with different answers, and whether the hair underneath still needs treating. There is no point fading a mark on a jawline that is going to be waxed again in three weeks. I will tell you plainly which of the two you have, roughly how long it will take, and if it is scarring rather than pigment I will tell you that as well instead of selling you a course of something that cannot work.
