There is laser hair removal all over Atlanta. There is almost nobody in Atlanta who specialises in Black skin.
Those are two different things, and the difference is the reason so many Black women in Atlanta walk out of a clinic with burns, dark patches or nothing at all to show for their money. A laser that clears hair beautifully on pale skin reads melanin as its target. Point it at Fitzpatrick V or VI skin at the wrong setting, with the wrong wavelength, and it treats your skin as the hair. You do not get a clean result. You get a shadow that lasts a year.
What goes wrong in Atlanta clinics
The machine is usually an IPL, sold to the clinic and to you as a laser. It is not a laser. It fires a broad band of light instead of one wavelength, which means it cannot be aimed past your pigment. On light skin it is forgiving. On Black skin it is the single most common cause of the burns and dark marks I see.
The second problem is the operator. In Georgia the training required to hold the handpiece is thin, and almost none of it is specific to darker skin. Someone can be perfectly well-meaning, perfectly certified, and still have never been taught what Nd:YAG is for or why your chin is not the same job as somebody else’s.
Chin and jaw hair is the reason most women call me
Coarse dark hair along the chin and jawline, growing back within days of shaving, thicker every year. It is hormonal more often than not, and it does not respond to the things sold for it — creams, threading, waxing, home devices. Each of those pulls or irritates, and on melanin-rich skin irritation is answered with pigment. That is how a hair problem quietly becomes a dark mark problem.
Nd:YAG is the wavelength that goes past melanin instead of into it. On dark skin it is the right tool, it hurts considerably less than what most clinics use, and it works faster. White and grey hairs it cannot see at all — those need electrolysis, and I will tell you that up front rather than sell you sessions that cannot work.
What I will tell you honestly
If the hair arrived suddenly, or it came with weight changes, missed periods or thinning at your temples, that can point to a hormonal cause that belongs with your doctor first. I will say so rather than take your money.
