Why it comes back so fast
Because the follicle is still there, still supplied with blood, still receiving the hormonal signal that told it to produce a terminal hair in the first place. Shaving cuts the shaft. Cream dissolves the shaft. Wax and tweezers pull out the shaft and some of the root but leave the follicle intact and inflamed. In every case the follicle is untouched, so it simply makes another one.
Laser is different in kind, not in degree. The light is absorbed by the pigment inside the hair, converts to heat, and that heat damages the follicle itself. That is why it is the only thing on the list with a lasting result — and also why it cannot touch a white or grey hair, which has no pigment to absorb anything.
The wavelength matters more than the brand
Clinics advertise machine names. What actually decides whether a treatment is safe on your skin is the wavelength. Shorter wavelengths — IPL, alexandrite — are absorbed by pigment near the surface, which on Fitzpatrick V and VI skin means your skin, not just the hair. Nd:YAG is longer. It travels past the surface melanin to the follicle. That is the whole reason it is the correct choice on darker skin, and it is also why it is considerably more comfortable.
What I will check before treating you
Which hairs are pigmented and which are not, whether there is already pigment damage from years of plucking, and whether the pattern suggests a hormonal cause that belongs with your doctor first. If it does, I will tell you, and I will tell you before you have paid me anything.
