That is the part nobody warns you about. You deal with the hair — wax, thread, shave, cream — and what is left behind is a darker band above your lip that makeup sits badly on and that looks, in every photograph, like you did not wash your face. It is not dirt and it is not a moustache. It is pigment your own skin made.
Why it happens on melanin-rich skin
Every time a hair is ripped out of the follicle, the skin around it is injured. Every time hot wax or a chemical cream sits on that strip, it is injured. On pale skin the body forgets. On melanin-rich skin the repair response includes pigment, so the skin marks the spot. Do it every three weeks for ten years and you have trained a permanent shadow onto your lip line.
Threading is not gentler
Threading has a reputation for being the safe option because there is no heat and no chemical. There is still traction. The hair is still being pulled out at the root, and the skin is still being tugged and inflamed. For a woman whose skin answers inflammation with pigment, threading and waxing produce the same shadow by the same route.
What actually clears it
Two problems, two jobs, in this order. First stop making new pigment, which means stopping the pulling — Nd:YAG for the dark hair, electrolysis for any white or grey hairs the laser cannot see. Then treat the pigment that is already there. I use mandelic acid, not glycolic. Glycolic has a small molecule that drives in fast, and on darker skin that speed irritates, and irritation is what made the mark to begin with. I do not use hydroquinone and I do not use anything containing mercury.
The order matters. Treating the mark while you are still waxing the lip every three weeks is pouring water into a bucket with a hole in it.
