BLACK SKIN LASER HAIR REMOVAL — MACON, GEORGIA

If you paid for a course of laser and the hair is still there, you were most likely treated with the wrong wavelength — or with a machine that is not a laser at all.

This is the most frequent story I hear from women who drive to me from Macon. Six sessions, sometimes eight, at a chain or a med spa. Some shedding early on, then nothing. The hair came back. Nobody could explain why, and the answer offered was usually that your hair or your hormones are unusual. Both are possible. Neither is the likeliest explanation.

The three things that actually go wrong

First, the machine is an IPL. IPL is sold as laser and is not one — it fires a broad band of light rather than a single wavelength, which makes it both weaker at the follicle and more dangerous on melanin-rich skin. It is the most common device in the market because it is cheap to buy.

Second, the settings were turned down. An operator who is nervous about your skin tone, and right to be nervous with the machine in front of them, reduces the energy until it is safe. Safe and ineffective are the same setting on the wrong device. You felt very little, nothing burned, and nothing was destroyed either.

Third, some of your hair is white, grey or very fine. Laser locates a hair by the pigment inside it. A hair with no pigment is invisible to every laser ever built. If a meaningful share of your hair is unpigmented, a laser package was never going to clear it, and you should have been told that before you paid.

What I will do differently

Look at your actual hair and your actual skin and tell you which category each hair falls into. Nd:YAG for pigmented hair, because it travels past surface melanin instead of being absorbed by it. Electrolysis for the white and grey, one follicle at a time, at $50 per fifteen minutes. And if what you have will not respond to either, you will hear that from me before you book anything.

It is a long drive from Macon. Women make it because there is nobody closer who does only this.
