Dark underarms are almost never a hygiene problem, and the products sold for them are usually what made them dark.

Black women in McDonough tell me they have stopped wearing sleeveless anything. They scrub, they switch deodorants, they buy the lightening cream, and the skin gets darker. The reason is straightforward once somebody explains it: the underarm is a fold that is shaved, rubbed by fabric, treated with alcohol-based antiperspirant and scrubbed, several times a week, for years. On melanin-rich skin every one of those irritations is answered with pigment.

Shaving is the main driver

Not because shaving is dirty, but because it is constant low-grade injury to the same square inches of skin, two or three times a week. Add a blunt blade, dry shaving, or shaving straight after deodorant, and you have irritation plus ingrown hairs, which are their own separate dark spots. The shadow you can see when the skin is freshly shaved is partly pigment and partly the dark hair sitting just under the surface.

What makes it worse

Scrubs, loofahs and gritty exfoliants — fresh irritation every time. Glycolic acid, which has a small molecule that penetrates fast, and on darker skin that speed irritates. And skin-lightening creams bought over the counter or online, some of which contain mercury or unregulated hydroquinone and can leave a deeper bluish discolouration that is much harder to treat than the original problem. I do not use either of those ingredients and I would tell you to stop today.

The order that works

Clear the hair first with Nd:YAG so the shaving stops and the ingrowns stop, which ends the source of new pigment. Then treat the pigment that is already there with mandelic acid, which works more slowly and far more kindly on Black skin. Doing it in the other order wastes your money, because you are fading a mark while still manufacturing new ones every Tuesday and Friday.
