What I Wish Every New PCOS Patient Knew Before Her First Laser Session

By Eva Taub

I’ve had this same conversation with new PCOS patients more times than I can count, so I wanted to write down what I actually tell them at that first appointment.

This will probably take 20 to 30 sessions, sometimes more. A lot of hair removal marketing is built around a standard package — 6 to 8 sessions — but that’s not actually enough, for anyone, in my experience. A minimum of 12 sessions is the baseline I plan for every client, hormonal driver or not. PCOS-driven hair takes real numbers beyond even that baseline: PCOS is a genuine underlying hormonal imbalance, in the same category as endometriosis, Cushing’s syndrome, insulin resistance, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and your hormones are actively producing new terminal hairs throughout your entire treatment course. For a true hormonal imbalance like PCOS specifically, plan on 20 to 30 sessions or more to get where you want to be. That’s not a sign anything is wrong or that treatment “isn’t working” — it’s the nature of treating a hormonal condition, not a cosmetic one.

You’ll probably need maintenance, indefinitely. Because PCOS doesn’t go away, occasional touch-up sessions months or years later are normal, not a failure of the original treatment. I’d rather tell you that now than have you feel discouraged later when a few hairs return.

The laser matters more than almost anything else. If you’ve had a bad experience with hair removal before — burns, dark marks, no results — there’s a real chance the equipment wasn’t properly suited to your skin tone. This is the single most common reason I see for “failed” past treatment, and it’s worth confirming before you start anywhere.

Managing the hormonal side helps the cosmetic side. I’m not a physician, and I always encourage clients to work with one on the hormonal root cause alongside cosmetic treatment. It won’t replace what laser does, but it can make your results more durable over time.

Mostly, I want new patients to walk in with realistic expectations, because realistic expectations are what actually keep people showing up consistently enough to get real results. This isn’t a quick fix, but it is a genuinely solvable problem.
