Can You Still Have Endometriosis After a Hysterectomy?
Yes. I know it, because I watched it happen to my daughter.
My daughter’s story
She had PCOS from age 14 and then stage 4 endometriosis. She has had 19 surgeries. What was left of her uterus, the final quarter, was taken out when she was around 40. The endometriosis continued anyway.
Why? Because endometriosis creates its own blood supply. It does not need a period, and it does not need a uterus, to keep going. Her most recent surgery was this year, in March. When the pain came back, with back and kidney pain, the specialist said it had most likely returned near the kidney, the ureter or the bladder.
What I want every woman to know
- A hysterectomy is not a guarantee. Endometriosis cells can be anywhere in the belly, and they make their own blood supply.
- No vitamin, supplement or diet cures it. Be careful with anyone selling you one.
- What you feel is real. If a doctor brushes you off, go to another doctor. When my daughter was 16, a doctor suggested a hysterectomy. I walked out.
- Find a specialist who treats endometriosis every day.
This is what I have learned in 40 years of treating women and men. It is my experience, not a replacement for your doctor.
