Why do I have to shave my face every single day?

Answered by Eva Taub

If you’re shaving your face every morning and by evening you can already feel stubble again, I want you to know something first: that isn’t normal, and it isn’t your fault.

I’ve met women who shaved before work, again before dinner, and one more time before going out in the evening because they were terrified someone would notice. Some carried tweezers in every purse they owned. Others avoided bright restaurants, dating, or standing too close during conversations. After more than forty years treating hormonal facial hair, I’ve learned that this isn’t really about hair. It’s about what that hair steals from your confidence.

Daily shaving leaves a dark shadow and irritation on the chin and neck. Permanent removal ends the cycle.

When facial hair grows back this quickly, it almost always tells me that active hormones are stimulating those follicles. PCOS is the most common reason I see it, but it isn’t the only one. Insulin resistance, menopause, thyroid disorders, certain medications, and other hormonal conditions can all produce the same pattern. The speed of the regrowth is often an important clue that something deeper may be happening.

Here’s what’s actually happening beneath the skin. Hormones called androgens stimulate certain hair follicles to produce thicker, darker, coarser hairs. Those follicles become much more active than they were before, producing hair more rapidly and more consistently. Every time you shave, you’re only cutting the hair at the surface. The follicle underneath continues doing exactly what the hormones are telling it to do, so it simply grows another hair.

That’s why shaving never causes the problem — but it also never solves it.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is: “If I shave every day, eventually the hair will stop growing.” Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. Shaving does not make hair grow faster, thicker, or darker — that’s a common myth. But it also doesn’t slow the follicle down. It simply removes the visible part of the hair for a short time before the next one appears.

Daily shaving also has another consequence, especially in melanin-rich skin. Repeated shaving can lead to chronic irritation, ingrown hairs, razor bumps, and the dark marks that many women struggle with for years. I often see women who originally came because of unwanted facial hair but are even more distressed by the pigmentation left behind from years of trying to manage it.

That’s why I focus on treating the follicle itself instead of asking women to spend the rest of their lives chasing the hair every morning.

When the correct laser is used for your skin tone and hair type, each treatment permanently disables the follicles it successfully reaches. Hormonal conditions like PCOS often continue recruiting new follicles over time, which is why treatment usually takes longer than it does for women without a hormonal condition. That doesn’t mean the laser isn’t working. It means we’re treating an active hormonal process rather than a fixed amount of hair.

I also tell every woman the same thing between treatments. Please don’t wax, tweeze, or thread. Shaving is actually the method I prefer because it leaves the follicle in place for the laser to target during your next session. Pulling the hair out from the root works against what we’re trying to accomplish.

The goal isn’t simply to help you shave less. It’s to help you wake up without immediately wondering whether you need to reach for the razor before anyone sees you.

If you are not anywhere near Newnan

Most women who read this page are nowhere near my treatment room, and I am not going to pretend a consultation in Georgia is useful to someone in Ohio.

What I can send you is the same mandelic acid formulation I use on my own clients for exactly this. No hydroquinone. No bleaching agent. Nothing that strips your skin to make it lighter. Used twice a week, and one kit lasts three to five months.
