Why do I get razor bumps no matter how careful I shave?

I can usually answer this before someone finishes describing their shaving routine to me: if you have curly or coily hair, razor bumps happen because the cut hair curls back into the skin as it regrows — a mechanical result of your natural curl pattern, not a sign you’re shaving incorrectly. Better shaving technique can reduce how bad it gets, but in my experience, for many people it can’t be shaved away entirely, because the cause is the hair itself, not the method. What I actually recommend is laser hair removal, because it addresses the cause instead of trying to out-technique it.
