What makes a laser actually safe for dark skin?

I wish more women asked me this question before having laser hair removal somewhere else instead of after they’ve already been burned.
After more than forty years treating melanin-rich skin, I’ve seen too many women who were told, “All lasers are basically the same.” They’re not.
The short answer is that safety begins with the laser wavelength. I use the long-pulse Nd:YAG laser because it was specifically designed for melanin-rich skin — not adapted for it afterward. But I also tell women something that’s just as important. The machine is only half of the equation. The person operating it matters just as much.
I’ve watched women receive treatments with an excellent laser and still develop burns, blistering, or permanent discoloration because the settings weren’t appropriate for their skin tone, their hair color, or the area being treated. No laser should ever be placed on “default.” Every treatment has to be adjusted for the individual sitting in front of me.
That’s why experience matters. Melanin-rich skin doesn’t behave exactly like lighter skin. It absorbs laser energy differently, responds differently, and deserves someone who understands those differences rather than treating every client exactly the same.
Another misconception I hear constantly is: “If it’s safe for dark skin, it must be weaker.” The opposite is true. The goal isn’t to use less energy. The goal is to use the right wavelength and the right settings so the laser reaches the hair follicle while protecting the surrounding skin. A properly performed Nd:YAG treatment should be both effective and safe.
I also want women to understand something about expectations. Safe laser hair removal is still permanent laser hair removal. It isn’t a quick cosmetic procedure that solves everything in three or four treatments.
For hormonally driven hair growth, I plan on a minimum of twelve treatments, because that’s what decades of experience have taught me is realistic. If the unwanted hair is being driven by an ongoing hormonal condition such as PCOS, menopause, insulin resistance, endometriosis, Cushing’s syndrome, or Hashimoto’s disease, treatment commonly continues for twenty-five to forty sessions or more, followed by occasional maintenance if the hormonal activity continues.
That doesn’t mean the laser isn’t working. Every successful treatment permanently disables the follicles it reaches. What it can’t do is stop your body from activating new follicles in the future if your hormones continue sending those signals.
That’s why I spend as much time educating women as I do treating them. When you understand why your hair grows the way it does, why the correct wavelength matters, and why hormonal hair requires a different treatment plan than ordinary hair growth, you stop expecting miracles in three sessions and start understanding what realistic, permanent improvement actually looks like.
When someone tells me they’ve been refused laser because they have dark skin, I don’t automatically assume laser is unsafe. I assume they may not have found someone with the right equipment or enough experience treating melanin-rich skin. Those are two very different things.
