The dark marks on your neck are not a rash and they are not getting better on their own. They are what waxing and threading left behind.

The neck is the worst place on the body to pull hair out of Black skin, and it is the place women are most often talked into doing it. The skin there is thinner than on the face, it moves constantly, and the hair grows in every direction at once rather than in one neat line. So a strip of wax or a thread takes the hair and irritates a wide band of skin at the same time, and melanin-rich skin answers irritation by making pigment.

Why the neck marks so badly

Three things happening together. The pulling injures each follicle. Tightly curled hair that is severed below the surface curls back and grows into the skin, creating an ingrown that is its own small inflamed spot. And every one of those spots heals dark. Do it every three or four weeks and the marks overlap into a band of discolouration across the throat that does not look like hair damage at all — it looks like a stain.

What most women try next

Scrubbing, which is fresh irritation. Glycolic acid, whose small molecule drives in fast and irritates darker skin. And over-the-counter lightening creams, some containing mercury or unregulated hydroquinone, which can leave a deeper, bluish discolouration that is considerably harder to treat than what you began with. I do not use hydroquinone and never anything with mercury in it.

Two problems, in order

First stop the source. Nd:YAG for the pigmented hair — it passes through melanin instead of into it, which is what makes it safe and comfortable on your skin — and electrolysis for any white or grey hairs the laser cannot detect. Once the pulling stops and the ingrowns stop, no new pigment is being made.

Then treat the marks that are there, with mandelic acid, slowly and gently. That order is not optional. Fading a neck you are still waxing every month is work that undoes itself.
