It is one of the most common things Black women in South Fulton say to me on the phone. Somebody looked at their skin, said laser is not safe for you, and sent them home. Sometimes it was said kindly. It is still not true, and it has cost women years.

What that clinic actually meant

What they meant, whether they knew it or not, is that their machine is not safe for you. Most clinics run one device, usually an IPL or an alexandrite, and both of those aim at pigment. Your skin has a great deal of pigment. So on you the machine cannot tell the hair from the skin, and a responsible operator with only that machine is right to refuse.

But that is a statement about their equipment, not about your skin. Nd:YAG is a longer wavelength. It passes through melanin instead of absorbing into it, which is exactly why it is the wavelength used on Fitzpatrick V and VI skin, and why it is both safer and considerably more comfortable on you than what you were turned away from.

What being refused costs

Women who get turned away do not stop. They go back to tweezers, wax, threading, depilatory cream and the razor, every few days, for years. Every one of those pulls or burns the skin, and melanin-rich skin answers irritation by making pigment. So a woman arrives here five years later with the original hair problem plus a dark mark problem she did not have before, and now there are two things to fix.

What I do differently

I have spent forty-plus years on Black and melanin-rich skin specifically, in Florida and now in Georgia. It is not a service line I added. It is the whole practice. I will tell you which of your hairs laser can treat, which need electrolysis because they are white or grey and the laser cannot see them, and whether your dark marks will fade or not. If the honest answer is that I cannot help you, you will get that answer too.
