Painful bumps and dark spots along the bikini line are not an infection and they are not poor hygiene. They are hairs that never made it out of the skin.
Black women in College Park deal with this after every shave and every wax. Tightly curled hair does not grow straight up. It grows in a curve, and when it is cut off at an angle by a razor it turns back and re-enters the skin instead of coming out of it. Each buried hair inflames. Each inflammation, on melanin-rich skin, leaves a dark mark behind. So you end up with two problems stacked on top of each other: the bumps that hurt now, and the stippled darkening that stays long after the bump has gone.
Why the usual advice fails
Exfoliating harder pushes more irritation into skin that is already inflamed. Digging a hair out with tweezers or a needle is a fresh wound in a spot that already knows how to make pigment. Waxing empties the follicle but does nothing about the curve, so the next hair does exactly the same thing. And shaving closer — the instinct everyone has — makes the tip sharper and the angle worse.
Eva’s solution
I treat the hair first, because a hair that does not grow cannot grow inwards. For dark coarse hair on Black skin I use long-pulse Nd:YAG 1064 laser. It is the only wavelength I will use on Fitzpatrick IV to VI, because it passes the melanin in your skin instead of burning it. IPL is not a laser — it fires a broad band of light and your skin absorbs a great deal of it. If a clinic says “medical grade IPL” or “IPL laser”, that is IPL, and on this area on your skin I would not let it near you.
Anything that has turned white or grey, laser cannot see at all, because there is no pigment in the hair for the beam to find. That is electrolysis, a fine probe into each follicle, one at a time.
Two rules while treatment runs: no plucking and no digging, because every excavation is a fresh injury and a fresh mark; and no waxing, because an empty follicle gives the laser nothing to aim at. Shave or trim instead. Shaving does not make hair thicker or darker, whatever you have been told.
The dark marks I treat alongside the hair, with mandelic acid rather than glycolic. Glycolic penetrates fast, and on darker skin that speed irritates — and irritation is what made the pigment.
