What makes it worse
Scrubbing, pumice stones and gritty exfoliants. Glycolic acid, which has a small molecule that penetrates fast — on darker skin that speed irritates, and irritation is exactly what made the pigment in the first place. And skin-lightening creams bought without a prescription, which are the most dangerous thing in this whole list. Many still contain mercury or unregulated strengths of hydroquinone. I have spent forty years correcting skin damaged by those creams, and that damage is far harder to fix than the original dark patch.
Eva’s solution
I treat these with mandelic acid, not glycolic. Mandelic has a large molecule, sits on the surface and works slowly, and slow is the whole point on Black skin. Alongside that: stop the friction, protect from the sun while the skin is healing, and give it months rather than weeks. Pigment that took fifteen years to build does not leave in three treatments, and anyone promising you that is selling something.
One thing I will tell you honestly at the consultation. If the darkening is velvety and thickened rather than flat — if it feels raised and soft, not just discoloured — that can point to insulin resistance, and it belongs with your doctor, not with a cosmetic treatment. I will say so rather than take your money.
