IPL vs. Medical Laser: What Every Woman Should Know

For over 40 years I have treated women suffering from PCOS, hormonal facial hair, menopause-related hair growth, and excessive facial and body hair. One of the most common questions I hear is: “Should I buy a home laser?”

My answer has remained the same for decades. No.

If your goal is professional, long-term hair removal — especially if you have PCOS, hormonal imbalance, menopause, or darker skin — I believe home devices are a poor investment compared with proper medical treatment. Many women come to my clinic after spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on home devices, only to discover that they still need professional treatment. The reason is simple. Home devices are not built like medical laser systems.

A Professional Nd:YAG Laser Is a Medical Device

The long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser that I use in my practice is a sophisticated medical machine, not a household appliance. It contains large capacitor banks that store enormous amounts of electrical energy before releasing that energy in a precisely controlled pulse, tuned to a specific wavelength and pulse duration so it reaches the hair follicle without damaging the skin around it. That’s part of why these machines are physically large, cabinet-sized systems, not something that would ever fit in your hand: they need advanced cooling systems to manage the heat that much stored energy generates, high-voltage electronics to control it precisely, specialized optics to deliver it accurately, and years of professional training to operate all of it safely.

During my career I personally experienced a capacitor failure inside one of these professional Nd:YAG lasers. The discharge was so powerful that it shook the building. That experience left a lasting impression on me. These are not small household appliances. They are powerful medical systems designed to deliver controlled energy deep enough to permanently damage the hair follicle while protecting the surrounding skin — and that same amount of stored energy is exactly why the engineering, safety systems, and professional oversight around them exist in the first place.

There Is No Home Equivalent

To the best of my knowledge, there is no home-use device that is equivalent to a professional long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser used in medical practice. If you have darker skin, hormonal facial hair, or PCOS, that difference is extremely important. Professional long-pulsed Nd:YAG lasers were developed specifically because they can treat many darker skin types more safely when used correctly by experienced professionals. That technology is not available in a consumer home device.

Many advertisements make home devices sound as though they perform the same treatment offered in a medical clinic. They do not. The engineering, energy delivery, cooling systems, optical design, and overall performance are fundamentally different. No amount of marketing can change those differences.

IPL Is Not a Laser

One of the biggest misconceptions in the beauty industry — in home devices and in plenty of professional settings too — is that IPL and laser hair removal are the same treatment. They are not. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. A laser produces one specific wavelength of light that is focused precisely on its target. IPL produces a broad spectrum of filtered light containing many wavelengths. Although both use light, they are completely different technologies.

This distinction is especially important for women with darker skin. Professional long-pulsed Nd:YAG lasers were specifically developed for treating many darker skin tones because their wavelength allows experienced practitioners to target the hair follicle while reducing absorption in surrounding skin. Many IPL devices — home or professional — cannot achieve that same level of selectivity.

For women with PCOS, hormonal facial hair, or darker skin, choosing the wrong technology may result in disappointing results, the need for many additional treatments, or an increased risk of burns or pigment changes if the device is not appropriate for their skin type.

Why Home Devices Must Be Weak

Here’s something almost nobody explains to women shopping for a home device: the weakness isn’t a flaw. It’s required by law. A professional laser is operated by someone who has spent years learning skin types, wavelengths, pulse duration, cooling, burn risk, and treatment planning — me, in my own practice. A company selling a device to millions of strangers has no idea who’s actually holding it. It could be a teenager. Someone with dark skin the device was never tested on. Someone taking a photosensitizing medication. Someone who skips the instructions entirely. Because the manufacturer can’t control any of that, the device has to be built weak enough that almost nobody can seriously injure themselves with it. That same safety ceiling is exactly what limits how effective it can ever be.

Why Professional Lasers Cost Tens of Thousands of Dollars

Women often ask me this directly, and I think they deserve a real answer instead of a shrug. The capacitor banks alone that safely store and release that much energy are expensive to build and maintain. Then there’s the cooling system needed to manage the heat that energy generates, the precision optics that deliver it accurately to the follicle and nowhere else, the ongoing calibration and maintenance every professional machine requires, and the engineering behind all of it working together safely, pulse after pulse, for years. None of that exists in a device built to sell at a consumer price point. You’re not just paying for a stronger light. You’re paying for everything required to make that strength safe.

Why Hormonal Hair Is Especially Difficult

This is the part I think gets missed most in the home-device conversation. It isn’t just that these devices have less energy. It’s that no amount of energy from a home device solves the actual problem behind hormonal hair. PCOS, menopause, endometriosis, and insulin resistance keep recruiting new follicles into active growth for as long as the hormonal driver stays active — the same reason I plan a full course of sessions, not a handful, for anyone with a hormonal cause. A weak device treating a small number of follicles, on a condition that keeps producing new ones, was never going to keep up. Women in this situation often conclude “laser doesn’t work for me,” when what actually happened is the treatment was never powerful enough to touch hormonal hair in the first place.

What About Professional IPL?

I get asked this constantly too: “But my med spa uses IPL — isn’t that different from a home device?” Partly, yes. A professional IPL machine is stronger than anything sold for home use, and it’s operated by a trained technician rather than you alone in your bathroom. But it’s still IPL, not a true laser — a broad, unfiltered spectrum of light rather than one focused wavelength — and that fundamental difference doesn’t go away just because the setting changed from a bedroom to a spa. For darker skin tones and hormonal hair specifically, that broader spectrum scatters more in the skin and is absorbed less precisely, which is a real part of why I use long-pulsed Nd:YAG rather than IPL in my own practice, professional-grade or not.

Marketing Tricks Worth Recognizing

I want to give you the tools to read a product page the way I read one. “Permanent hair reduction” is not the same claim as “permanent hair removal,” and the difference is intentional — reduction just means fewer hairs, which almost any method can technically produce for a while. “Laser technology” is vague on purpose; it doesn’t tell you the wavelength, and it’s often used to describe IPL devices that aren’t lasers at all. “Professional results at home” asks you to believe that the safety ceiling I just described somehow doesn’t apply to your specific device. It does. None of this means every home device is a scam. It means the language on the box is written to be technically defensible, not to help you understand what you’re actually buying.

What I always tell my clients: don’t buy a device simply because the box says “laser.” Ask these questions instead:

• Is it actually a true laser, or is it IPL?
• Is it appropriate for my skin tone?
• Is it designed for hormonally driven facial hair?
• Has it been evaluated for women with PCOS?
• Who is responsible if my skin burns?
• Who will adjust the treatment if my skin reacts?

These are questions that marketing brochures rarely answer — but they are the questions that matter.

Every year I meet women who believe laser hair removal doesn’t work because they spent months or years using a device that was never designed to perform the same job as a medical laser. The disappointment isn’t their fault — it comes from marketing that makes two very different technologies sound almost identical. My goal isn’t to sell you a treatment. It’s to make sure you understand the difference before you spend your money.
