Why didn’t laser work on my hormonal hair?

Answered by Eva Taub

I hear this often, and it’s rarely the client’s fault. There are usually two explanations. First, a minimum of 12 sessions applies in every case I treat, and hormonal hair from PCOS or menopause keeps being “refreshed” by active hormone levels on top of that baseline — if the underlying cause is a true hormonal imbalance like PCOS, endometriosis, Cushing’s syndrome, insulin resistance, or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a full course is often 20 to 30 sessions or more, with ongoing maintenance after that. If you stopped anywhere short of 12 sessions, that was very likely not enough, hormonal hair or not. Second, if the wrong laser wavelength was used for your skin tone, results can be poor or inconsistent regardless of how many sessions you had — this is unfortunately common and worth confirming with a new provider experienced in melanin-rich skin.

Why laser did not work on your hormonal facial hair — the four real reasons

One: it was not a laser. If you were treated with IPL, it was never going to clear coarse hormonal hair on black skin, and it may have left dark marks instead. IPL is broad-spectrum light, not a laser.

Two: the hair had no pigment left. A laser finds hair by its pigment. White and grey hairs have none, so the beam passes straight over them. You can run ten sessions and they will still be there. That is electrolysis territory, one follicle at a time.

Three: the number of sessions was a marketing number. Each session only disables hairs in their growing stage that day — often 7 to 10 per cent of what is on your face. Real reduction usually takes twelve treatments and often fifteen to eighteen. Hormonal hair driven by PCOS, thyroid conditions, insulin resistance or menopause can take considerably more, because the cause upstream keeps switching on new follicles.

Four: it made things worse. Under-powered treatment of fine hair on the face and neck can stimulate rather than destroy — paradoxical hypertrichosis. It is uncommon, it is real, and it happens most often on exactly the jaw and neck areas women are treating for hormonal hair.

What to do now

Find out which of those four it was before you buy another package. The answer changes the treatment completely, and nobody should be selling you more sessions without knowing.

Jaw and neck before treatment: dense coarse dark hair with widespread dark marks around the follicles on Black skin
Before
The same jaw and neck after one year: even skin tone, dark marks cleared, only fine white hairs remaining
After one year

The dark hair is gone, and the dark marks went with it. What is left is white hair — which no laser can see, because there is no pigment for the beam to find. That part is electrolysis, one follicle at a time.Long-pulse Nd:YAG for the dark hair, electrolysis for the white, mandelic acid for the discoloration. Twelve months. Every treatment performed by Eva Taub. Results differ from person to person.
