Who Can Legally Do Laser Hair Removal? States With No License
I say this plainly after 40 years. In some places, almost anyone can buy a laser and put it on your face.
No license at all
New York has no state license to operate a laser for hair removal. No special training is required. A few other states, such as Missouri, Nevada and Pennsylvania, have very little written on who may operate one. Rules change, so check your own state before you book.
States with rules, but weak ones
In Georgia you do need a license, but in my opinion the rules are backward. Georgia counts an IPL as a laser, and an IPL is not a laser. Alabama requires no laser license of its own, only medical supervision. In Florida the rules are strict, and passing off an IPL as a laser can cost you your license.
Why this matters for your skin
A real laser costs well over a hundred thousand dollars. An IPL costs a few thousand. On dark skin, IPL, diode and alexandrite can burn you or do nothing. For Black and dark skin, the right machine is the Nd:YAG.
Ask: where were you trained?
Listen to me explain it. If you cannot come to see me in Miami or Newnan, look for someone trained by me, and ask her.
Ask her: Were you trained and certified by Eva Taub and her course? If she studied my course, it is on her wall, and she will know what to do and what not to do on your skin. If she was not, ask the rest:
- What laser do you use, and is it an Nd:YAG for dark skin?
- How long have you done laser?
- How many Black patients have you treated?
- What conditions have you treated?
- What do you know about Black skin?
Do not be shy. It is your skin and your money. Cheap is expensive. A $40 deal can end with a burn and a bill for a plastic surgeon.
This is what I have learned in 40 years of treating women and men. It is my experience, not a replacement for your doctor. Laws change, so ask your state board.
